Best Credit Cards for Paying Rent (Without Fees)

Rent is probably your single largest monthly expense. If you're paying $1,500 to $3,000 per month and earning zero rewards on it, you're leaving hundreds of dollars on the table every year. The good news: several credit cards now let you pay rent and actually come out ahead. The catch is knowing which cards to use, which platforms to pay through, and how to avoid the processing fees that can eat into your rewards.

Why Paying Rent With a Credit Card Matters

The average American renter pays $1,750 per month in rent. That's $21,000 per year. Even a modest 2% cash back rate turns that into $420 in annual rewards. With the right card and the right platform, you can do even better โ€” especially when you factor in welcome bonus spending requirements.

But there's a catch. Most landlords don't accept credit cards directly, and the platforms that facilitate credit card rent payments typically charge 2.5-2.85% in processing fees. That fee can wipe out your rewards entirely unless you're strategic.

  • You're using a card that earns more than 2.85% back on the transaction

Cards that can beat the fee on Plastiq:

  • Chase Ink Business Preferred โ€” If Plastiq codes as "travel" (it sometimes does), you'd earn 3x UR points.
  • Any card during welcome bonus period โ€” If you need to spend $4,000 in 3 months for a $750 bonus, paying $2,000 in rent through Plastiq costs $57 in fees but gets you closer to a $750 bonus. Easy math.

Landlord Accepts Venmo, PayPal, or Zelle

Some landlords accept peer-to-peer payments:

  • PayPal Key (discontinued) โ€” This was the holy grail before PayPal killed it.
  • Venmo โ€” Now allows credit card funding with a 3% fee. Not usually worth it for ongoing payments.
  • Zelle โ€” Bank-to-bank only. No credit card option.

Gift Card Method (Advanced)

Some renters buy Visa or Mastercard gift cards at stores that earn bonus points, then use those gift cards to pay rent through services like Plastiq. This is a manufactured spending technique and carries risks:

  • Gift card purchase fees ($5-$7 per card)
  • Potential account closures if issuers flag the activity
  • Time-intensive
