Bilt Mastercard Review: The Only Card That Earns Points on Rent

By Card Playbook EditorialยทJanuary 19, 2026ยท12 min read

The Bilt Mastercard, issued by Wells Fargo, solves a problem that has frustrated renters for years: how to earn credit card rewards on your largest monthly expense without paying a fee to do so. Rent is typically the single biggest line item in a renter's budget โ€” averaging $1,700+ nationally โ€” and until Bilt, there was no way to earn meaningful rewards on it without eating 2.5-3% in processing fees.

The Core Value Proposition

You earn 1x Bilt points per dollar on rent payments with zero transaction fees.

That alone makes this card worth carrying. On $1,700/month rent, you earn 20,400 Bilt points per year. Bilt points transfer 1:1 to major airline and hotel partners, making each point worth approximately 1.5-2.0 cents. That is $306-$408 in annual travel value from a purchase you were already making.

No other credit card offers this. Period.

Transfer Partners: Where Bilt Points Shine

Bilt points transfer 1:1 to an impressive lineup of travel partners. This is the same caliber of transfer partnerships you find on cards with $400-$700 annual fees.

Airline partners: - American Airlines AAdvantage - United MileagePlus - Air Canada Aeroplan - Air France/KLM Flying Blue - British Airways Avios (also covers Iberia and Aer Lingus) - Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - Emirates Skywards - Ethiopian Airlines ShebaMiles - Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles - Virgin Atlantic Flying Club - Avianca LifeMiles - TAP Air Portugal Miles&Go

Hotel partners: - Hyatt (World of Hyatt) - IHG (IHG One Rewards) - Marriott (Marriott Bonvoy โ€” available at select Bilt Alliance properties)

The standout here is Hyatt, where points transfer 1:1 and typically deliver 1.8-2.5 cents per point in value. A 25,000-point Hyatt redemption at a Category 5 hotel (where rooms run $300-$500/night) means your rent payments funded a luxury hotel stay.

Rent Payment: How It Actually Works

Bilt offers two methods for paying rent with the card:

Method 1: Bilt Alliance Properties If your landlord or property management company is part of the Bilt Alliance network (2+ million units across major property management companies), rent payments are processed directly โ€” no setup friction, no fees, integrated into your property portal.

Method 2: Bilt Pay (for non-Alliance properties) If your landlord is not in the Bilt Alliance, Bilt Pay sends a physical check or ACH payment to your landlord on your behalf. You pay Bilt with your Bilt Mastercard; Bilt pays your landlord via their preferred method. No fee to you.

Setup steps for Bilt Pay: 1. Download the Bilt app 2. Add your landlord's name, address, and payment preferences 3. Set up autopay or manually trigger payment each month 4. Bilt charges your Mastercard and sends payment to your landlord

Important timing note: Bilt Pay payments take 3-5 business days to reach your landlord. Set up autopay to trigger 5-7 days before your rent due date to avoid late payments.

Rent Day: Double Points on the 1st

On the 1st of every month, all Bilt earning rates double:

  • Rent: 2x (instead of 1x)
  • Dining: 6x (instead of 3x)
  • Travel: 4x (instead of 2x)
  • Everything else: 2x (instead of 1x)

This is a significant bonus. If you consolidate large purchases on Rent Day, you can earn substantially more points. A $200 dinner on Rent Day earns 1,200 points instead of 600. Your $1,700 rent earns 3,400 points instead of 1,700.

Strategy: Schedule recurring bills, grocery runs, and any planned purchases for the 1st of the month when possible.

The 5-Transaction Minimum

Bilt requires you to make at least 5 transactions per month on the card to earn any points. This is designed to encourage regular card usage beyond just rent.

This is easy to hit if you use the card for even minor daily purchases:

  • Morning coffee ($4)
  • Gas fill-up ($50)
  • Grocery run ($80)
  • Streaming subscription ($15)
  • Lunch out ($12)

If you forget, simply make 5 small purchases (even $1 Amazon reloads count) before the end of the month.

Building Credit with Rent Payments

One of Bilt's underrated features: it reports your rent payments to all three credit bureaus (Experian, TransUnion, Equifax) as on-time payments. For renters building credit history, this is significant.

Traditionally, rent payments do not appear on your credit report unless you use a third-party reporting service (which typically charges $5-$10/month). Bilt includes this for free.

If you are a young professional or someone rebuilding credit, the combination of a no-annual-fee card plus rent reporting makes Bilt one of the best credit-building tools available.

Bilt Points Valuation

Based on transfer partner sweet spots, we value Bilt points at approximately 1.5-1.8 cents per point for average redemptions and up to 2.5+ cents per point for optimized transfers.

Best value redemptions: - Hyatt transfers for aspirational properties: 2.0-3.0 cpp - Air France/KLM Flying Blue during promo awards: 2.0-2.5 cpp - Virgin Atlantic for ANA first class: 3.0+ cpp - Turkish Miles&Smiles for Star Alliance business class: 2.0-2.5 cpp - United for short-haul domestic awards: 1.3-1.5 cpp

Worst value redemptions: - Marriott transfers (generally 0.7-0.9 cpp) - Statement credits (typically 0.5-0.7 cpp) - Gift cards (usually 0.5-1.0 cpp)

Always transfer to travel partners for maximum value. Avoid statement credits or gift card redemptions.

Who Should Get This Card?

Renters: If you pay rent, this card is a no-brainer. There is no reason not to carry it. The $0 annual fee means there is zero cost, and earning points on rent is pure upside.

Diners: 3x on dining (6x on Rent Day) makes this competitive with the Amex Gold for dining rewards, without the $250 annual fee.

Travel hackers: The transfer partner list rivals premium cards. Having access to Hyatt, United, and Turkish transfers on a no-fee card is exceptional.

Credit builders: Rent payment reporting to all 3 bureaus plus a no-annual-fee card with no minimum credit score requirement (though Wells Fargo does pull credit) makes this ideal for building history.

Who Should NOT Get This Card?

Homeowners: Without rent as a spending category, the card's everyday earning rates (1x-3x) are decent but not best-in-class for non-rent spending.

People who will not hit 5 transactions per month: If you carry multiple cards and might forget to use this one 5 times monthly, you will earn zero points. Set a reminder or automate small recurring charges.

The Bottom Line

The Bilt Mastercard is one of the most innovative credit cards released in the last decade. It created an entirely new rewards category โ€” rent โ€” that benefits the 44 million American households who rent. With $0 annual fee, 1:1 transfer partners that rival $695 cards, and the unique ability to build credit through rent payments, the Bilt Mastercard is an essential card for every renter in 2026.

Our rating: 4.5/5 โ€” docked only for the 5-transaction minimum requirement, which is a minor inconvenience but easy to manage.
